What is a Led Floodlight?
LED floodlights can also be called Outdoor LED spotlights, or LED projectors, which are large-area lighting fixtures used outdoors.
It has made technical improvements and innovations on the basis of traditional metal halide floodlights and HPS floodlight fixtures.
Use an LED solid cold light source to replace traditional metal halide bulb and HPS bulb light source. LED flood light does not contain any toxic gas, will not pollute the environment, and can be recycled.
What are the features and advantages of LED floodlights?
Horizontal light. The led light beam angle generally is 120-180° which will improve the efficiency of light utilization, reducing lighting pollution and waste.
High lumens. most of them are about 100lm/W output. Even it can be up to 150lm/W output for the best outdoor flood lights in markets, saving much more than 80% energy than traditional halogen flood lights or HPS floodlights.
Longer lifespan. The service life of LED reflector light is at least twice as long as that of a traditional projection lamp, which can reach 50000hrs. The outdoor LED projection light produced in 2013 is still in normal operation, and its service life has exceeded 7 years.
Instantaneous start-up. No need for a pre-warm-up start-up.
Low Light decay. It is a 1% decrease at 3000 hours. 3% decrease in 10000 hours.
Environment-friendly. Led floodlights do not contain mercury, toxic gases, and liquids, and will not pollute the environment. At the same time, some lamps can be replaced and reused by outdoor LED flood light bulbs.
What are the types of floodlights?
Most LED floodlight manufacturers offer mainly the following 3 types of outdoor led floodlight fixtures, including:
- outdoor stadium floodlights
- low-voltage led flood lights
- solar led floodlights
Outdoor Stadium Floodlights
The modular design is commonly adopted for outdoor stadium floodlights. Each module is planned with a power capacity of 50W, 100W, or 250W, and the total wattage can extend up to 1000W, 1500W, or even 2000W. These modules are then seamlessly assembled, enhancing both the lamp’s heat dissipation capabilities and simplifying maintenance procedures. Additionally, certain modules feature adjustable illumination angles, allowing for versatile lighting in different directions. This design is predominantly utilized in various settings such as football fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, tunnels, high pole lights, and construction sites
Low-voltage LED flood lights
Typically, these floodlights operate with an input voltage ranging from AC/DC12V, 24V, 36V, 48V, to 60V. In contrast to high-voltage alternatives with inputs of 110V or 220VAC, the low voltage floodlights are considered safer, particularly when installed in outdoor settings where they may be easily accessible to humans. They find frequent application in specialized environments like ships, mines, petrochemical facilities, and petrol stations.
Solar Led floodlights
“DOB” is the abbreviation of “Driver on board”, which means that the power supply is on the board. The so-called DOB LED floodlights mean that the AC power supply and LED chips are integrated into the PCB at the same time. It is also called a driverless AC LED floodlight. The cost of luminaries is the lowest, but in terms of quality, it is not as good as floodlights with constant current drive. Moreover, the input voltage of most DOB Flood lights can only be 220-240VAC, and the power factor is generally only about 0.5-0.6. Africa, Middle East, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and South America non-developed markets. This kind of lamp is not suitable for commercial and industrial projects and places with strict quality requirements.
What are floodlights used for?
Led floodlights are widely used for the following areas:
- Stadium fields, such as football fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, and other sports spaces.
- Public places: parks, plazas, gardens, roadway lighting, high mast lighting.
- Landscape lighting for trees,
- Industrial lighting for Warehouse, workshop, and factory.
- Commercial lighting for train stations, subway, parking lots, etc.

What is the difference between Spotlight and Floodlight?
In general, when people say floodlights or spotlights, they mean the same thing. But technically, there are some differences in beam angle.
Generally, flood lights have bigger beam angles like 90/120° which is an application for Lighting up the whole scene, suitable for big area lighting.
However, the spotlight fixture is with a narrow beam angle of 25/45/60°, These lights look like a beam of light, and generally, the straight-line distance illuminates will be farther than floodlights. Suitable for local lighting to highlight the characteristics of objects.
Can I replace flood lights with LED?
Yes. It is a smart choice.
LED is the latest technology in lighting, it can save much more than 60% at least than traditional metal halide flood lamps, for example, a 20W LED Flood light is okay to replace 150Watt old floodlights. All of the old flood light fixtures are with E27 OR R7S bulbs, there are the same e27 and R7S LED bulbs to replace them, and it is easy to do replacements. Just check if the input voltage of the LED flood light bulb is the same as the existing metal halide bulb because there are 220-240VAC Input and 110-120VAC input types optional around the world.
Can LED flood lights be dimmed?
Dimmable LED floodlights can be dimmed, but common LED floodlights are not. You need to check if your floodlights are dimmable or not.
Why are the LED floodlights flickering/flashing?
The flicker/flashing of LED lights is mainly related to LED chips or LED drivers (power supply), and LED floodlights are no exception.
First, the quality of LED chips. Normal single 1W led chips to withstand current: 280-300mA, voltage: 3.0-3.4V. If you use low-quality LED chips, they will not match the standard LED drive power parameters. Once the LED chips are subjected to excessive current, they will flash on and off. In severe cases, the gold wire or copper wire built into the chips will be burned, causing the chips to not light up.
The second is the LED driver problem. The main reason is that the electrolytic capacity inside the power supply is insufficient, and the output current and voltage of the lighting system cannot be controlled stably, which makes the LED flood light flash turn on and off.
Third, the temperature of the LED flood light is too high. Generally, this kind of light appears in LED flood light fixtures with built-in power supply. If the driver has an over-temperature protection function, and the material heat dissipation performance of the lamp cannot meet the requirements, the driver over-temperature protection will start to work and there will be flicker, for example, 20W floodlight housing is used to assemble 30W lamp, in this case, the heat dissipation will be too bad to working well.
Fourth, the floodlight is flooded. Floodlights are often used outdoors, if the waterproof strength is not enough, water ingress is likely to occur. Once water enters, it may cause the LED lamp beads to rust and break. As a result, flickering occurs.
Why are my flood lights not working?
- The connection method is wrong or the connection connector is not connected to cause no power;
- The problem of the lamp equipment, such as the driving power supply is broken, the LED chip is burned out, or the quality of the chemical products in the lamp, etc., if it is a connection problem, we can deal with it easily. Connect the digital camera, if it is the second problem, you need a professional or return to the factory for repair or malfunction.
What is the difference between flood lighting and street lighting?
The main difference between floodlights and street lamps is that street lamps generally illuminate the road surface directionally, and the width of the irradiation has certain requirements. Usually, street lighting uses polarized lenses to achieve this requirement.
The pursuit of floodlights is to illuminate a wider range as much as possible, and at the same time, the illumination range of floodlights is non-directional and can be changed at will with the mounting bracket.
How to choose led flood lights?
Outdoor floodlights, also known as outdoor spotlights, almost all large-area lighting fixtures used outdoors can be regarded as floodlights. It is often used in stadiums, building outlines, squares, overpasses, tunnels, parks and backyards, gardens, etc. As these lamps have a large number of options in the market with different specifications, it may be challenging to choose suitable floodlights for different applications. You need to consider the following factors when you choose which outdoor LED floodlight is the best for you.
Input voltage
The input voltage of LED floodlights on the market mainly includes 110-120VAC for Japan, USA, and Canada markets, 220-240VAC for other countries, and low voltage AC/DC12V, 24V, 36V, 48V, and 60V. Before purchasing floodlight fixtures, Please confirm which input voltage meets your needs.
lumen
When choosing exterior led floodlights, lumen value is more important than power value. Power value (Wattage) measures the energy required to illuminate the product, and lumens determine the brightness of the lamp. This means that the more lumens of the product, the brighter the lamp. Consumers should not choose projection lamps based on the power value (watts) but should consider how much brightness (lumens) they provide us.
Wattage
Wattage is a measure of the energy consumption of a lamp, not the amount of light it emits. For led floodlights, generally, 10W to 1000Watt is optional. For small places, it is enough for 10W-50Watt, they are suitable for installation at a height of 3-5 meters. Then the higher wattage is a better choice for a higher place, such as 500W LED floodlight for high mast lighting.
Beam angle
The beam angle of the led flood lights is wide or narrow, and the range is between 3°~140°. Different application places have different requirements for the luminous angle. For some trees, landscapes, or building outlines, it is more suitable to choose a narrow beam angle led floodlight, which can play a key part in the lighting effect, highlighting the characteristics of the illuminated object. However, for large spaces, then the wide distribution floodlights will be much better, such as 120° or 70*140°.
Color temperature
Led light color temperature refers to the color value emitted by the light source. Different light colors of lamps give people different feelings. There are three options for LED lamps on the market.
- 3000K warm white: looks like yellow, making people feel warm and comfortable.
- 4000K-4500K Natural white: looks like sunlight.
- 5500k-6500k cold white: Bluish white light.
How to install LED floodlights?
There are 3 installations for flood lights( Wall mounted, Surface installation, Base installation)
The steps are as follows:
- There are mounting holes on the projector lamp bracket.
- Lift the base to the installation position.
- Use a pen or other tools to make the position of the screw hole on the wall. Or put it onto the high pole.
- Drill holes.
- Install the base, fix the screws, etc.
- Adjust the screws on the fixing clip to adjust the floodlight to a proper angle of illumination.
- There are three power cords at the bottom of the flood light fixture. This cord is a 3-core wire; the blue wire is the neutral wire N, the brown-red wire is the live wire L, and the yellow/yellow-green wire is the ground wire PE.
