Modern Bathroom Lighting

Lighting is like a ritual button for the bathroom. The entire space is filled with a healing atmosphere when turning on lights, the fatigue of the whole day was instantly dissolved.
Bathroom lighting should provide both a cozy ambiance and meet everyday functional needs. To arrange the bathroom lighting fixtures reasonably, should accord to the lighting design logic of “where to illuminate”, “how to illuminate” and “what to use”.

Analyzing the daily needs

Washbasin and mirror cabinet area:This area requires even, soft lighting with adequate brightness for facial illumination, as it is used for daily tasks such as washing up, applying makeup, shaving, and checking skin condition.
Toilet area: This includes the daily needs of using the toilet, sitting on the toilet while using a phone, reading on the toilet, and cleaning the toilet, among others.
Shower area: The primary needs here are showering, taking a bath, and cleaning the area.

Choosing Right CCT and Lumen

If you makeup in the bathroom, then you should decisively choose 4000K. On the contrary, I would recommend 3000K for a more comfortable, upscale, and cozy atmosphere.
The average illumination in general bathroom areas is about 100 lux, while the lighting for the mirror area, which requires illumination for washing, makeup, and hair styling, should have an average illumination of over 150 lux.

Arrangement for Lighting Fixtures

Basic Lighting

Use ceiling cove lighting as the primary lighting, and add recessed downlights for additional general illumination if needed.

Accent Lighting

Install a spotlight directly above the sink. Additionally, small spotlights can be installed above decorations or paintings for accent lighting. Generally, the power and beam angle for accent lighting should not be too high—5-7W with a 24-degree beam angle (15 degrees for small decorations) would be sufficient.

Functional lighting

  • If you want to achieve a precise makeup lighting in your bathroom, you should consider the Color Rendering Index (CRI), with a focus on the R9 value (red rendering accuracy) and R15 (skin tone rendering accuracy). Simply looking at the Ra value is not sufficiently rigorous, as Ra is just the average of R1 to R8 values.
  • Options for face lighting include: installing small pendant lights or wall sconces on the left and right, hidden light strips above and below the mirror cabinet, soft lighting embedded in the mirror cabinet, or indirect lighting from a ceiling cove. If the bathroom is big, placing lights on both sides provides the best effect. For smaller bathrooms, a mirror light is ideal.
  • Install a spotlight above the toilet: 7W, 24-degree beam angle, about 30-50 cm away from the wall.
  • For the shower area, use waterproof recessed downlights (75mm cutout, 7-9W, IP65) or waterproof spotlights (75mm cutout, 7-9W, IP65, with a beam angle over 30 degrees for better effect).
  • For the bathtub area, you can set up indirect lighting in the ceiling cove and add lighting in wall niches. If you also need lighting for reading while soaking, you can install a reading wall lamp near the bathtub. Additionally, a spotlight above the bathtub can provide lighting for cleaning purposes. This light should have a separate switch.

Ambient lighting

  • Install motion sensor LED strips under the countertop with the following specifications: 4-6W per meter, DC24V, 3000K color temperature, Ra90, equipped with a motion sensor switch.
  • Add lighting to wall niches: niches can be set in the shower area, near the toilet, or by the bathtub. Place the light strip at the top of the niche to avoid water accumulation, which can cause damage and safety hazards. Suggested specifications: 4-6W per meter, DC24V, 3000K color temperature, Ra90, IP65.
